IEA SHC Task 46 Solar Resource Assessment and Forecasting

Project Duration:
07/2011 - 06/2015

Project Partners:
BLUE SKY Wetteranalysen

Funding Agency:
bmvit

IEA-Task 46 "Solar Resource Assessment and Forecasting" provides solar radiation data to energy providers, governmets and organisations in the field of renewable energy technologies.
Unlike its predecessor Task 36, in Task 46 the „bankability“ of the data and the use of radiation forecasts for real applications ("energy meteorologie") is discussed. This also represents the unique value for Austrian companies and institutions. The Austrian representatives contribute knowlegde from previous projects and ongoing activies.
The goal of this task is to provide information on solar radiation data, achievable preciseness and short and medium term radiation forecasts, so that plants can plan their operation in accordance with the predictions. Examples range from energy magement of thermal systems (as in the support of district heating in Wels – „Solheat.Net“ the Austrain representative task) to electric power generation with PV-systems throughout the network operation of an energy provider.

Other priorities in this task are:

  • Connection of solar radiation data with other sources of renewable energy
  • Short-term variations of solar radiation
  • Increasing the quality of radiation data
  • Improved model quality from satellite data
